It is difficult to make a recording for me today. Because there was a big earthquake in Turkey on February 6th. Everyone is sad, everyone is waiting for news from their relatives and friends. I decided to continue to talk about Turkish and Turkish culture. Because even if many buildings are destroyed, even if many people die, the culture there will live on forever..
I have received some messages from my students and friends from different countries. Thank you all so much.
So let’s start to talk about Turkish.
Today we will read a text in Turkish and at the end of this text we will learn some words by analyzing. Adjectives are especially important to us. I'm sure my students immediately understood what I meant.
Hadi başlayalım!
Burası İstanbul. İstanbul çok kalabalık bir şehir. Burada çeşit çeşit insan var. Bazı insanlar çok iyi. Bazıları kurnaz. Bazıları kaba. Bazıları kibar. Bazı insanlar mutlu, bazıları mutsuz. Bazı insanlar İstanbul'da yaşamayı çok seviyorlar, bazıları ise İstanbul'da yaşamaktan nefret ediyorlar. Yine de İstanbul büyüleyici bir şehir. Bunu hiç kimse reddetmiyor. Sadece, bazen İstanbul'da yaşamak çok zahmetli ve masraflı. Bu yüzden insanlar bazen küçük şehirlere taşınmak istiyorlar. Fakat bu çok zor, çünkü onlar gidiyor ve sonra İstanbul'u çok özlüyorlar. İşte İstanbul böyle bir şehir.
Now let's look at adjectives and some important verbs here.
1- Burada çeşit çeşit insan var.
Çeşit çeşit: (adj/ sıfat): different types of :
There are different types of yogurt in the market. : Markette çeşit çeşit yoğurt var.
(There are two words and they are both the same. I mean we use a word twice.)
2-Bazıları kurnaz.
Kurnaz: (adj/sıfat) : cunning :
He is a very cunning man. : O çok kurnaz bir adam. He can fool others very easily.
3-Yine de İstanbul büyüleyici bir şehir.
Yine de: (conjunction / bağlaç) : Nevertheless, anyway, though:
We use this word in different contexts. Let me give some examples:
I'm always thinking about you, though. Ben yine de hep seni düşünüyorum. (You don’t like me but I always think about you though)
I will tell you anyway.: Yine de sana söyleyeceğim. (For example, he told me not to tell you but I will tell you anyway.)
I am tired; nevertheless, I must finish my homework. : Yorgunum, yine de ödevimi bitirmeliyim.
Büyüleyici: (adj/sıfat) : fascinating/ charming :
You chose a fascinating subject to study : Çalışmak için büyüleyici bir konu seçtin.
There are many charming old buildings in the city center : Şehir merkezinde birçok büyüleyici eski bina var.
4- Bunu hiç kimse reddetmiyor.
Reddetmek: (verb/fiil) : to refuse, to reject
You do know, but you refuse to see it. : Biliyorsun ama görmeyi reddediyorsun.
I reject your offer. : Teklifinizi reddediyorum.
5- İstanbul'da yaşamak çok zahmetli ve masraflı.
Zahmetli: (adj/sıfat) : laborious (laboriyıs) / difficult
Cooking at home is a long and laborious work : Evde yemek yapmak uzun ve zahmetli bir iş.
Masraflı: (adj/sıfat) : costly, expensive
It's really expensive to buy a car nowadays.: Bugünlerde bir araba almak çok masraflı.
6- Bu yüzden insanlar bazen küçük şehirlere taşınmak istiyorlar.
Taşınmak: (verb/ fiil) : to move (Changing where you live.)
We moved to another house. : Biz başka bir eve taşındık.

This is Istanbul. Istanbul is a very crowded city. There are all kinds of people here. Some people are very kind. Some are cunning. Some are rude. Some are polite. Some people are happy, some are unhappy. Some people love living in Istanbul, while others hate it. Still, Istanbul is a mesmerizing city. No one denies that. It's just that, sometimes, living in Istanbul can be very demanding and expensive. That's why people sometimes want to move to smaller cities. However, it's very difficult because they leave and then miss Istanbul a lot. That's how Istanbul is.
