Hello and welcome to my podcast! There were many mistakes in the text you just listened to (I have to be honest, I had a hard time not correcting the mistakes while reading, teacher reflex). Some of you have probably already noticed these mistakes. But for some of you, I know that they sounded quite right, and that's why in today’s episode, we’ll be discussing common mistakes made by people who are learning Turkish.

As we all know, learning a language is not an easy process, and especially if you’re a Turkish learner, yeah I know buddy… Making mistakes is a natural part of this journey. There are certain aspects of Turkish that learners often struggle with. We’ll go over these errors with examples and discuss how to correct them.I hope you are making some of these mistakes and after this episode you will not do it again!  If you're ready, let's get started!

First, I’d like to talk about possessive suffixes. Many people learning Turkish think that simply saying “benim, senin, onun” is enough to express possession. But this is not entirely correct. In Turkish, you also need to use a suffix on the noun to indicate possession. For example, saying “benim anne” is incorrect. The correct way to say it is “benim annem.” Now, people will probably understand what you mean and won’t correct you, but this could lead to learning it incorrectly from the start. So, it’s always better to learn it right the first time.

Another common mistake is not using the correct case suffixes. In Turkish, some verbs require a specific case suffix on the noun in the sentence. Without the correct suffix, the sentence can lose its meaning or be grammatically wrong. For instance, the verb "gitmek" (to go) indicates movement towards a place, so it needs the dative case, so you should say "İstanbul’a gidiyorum," not "İstanbul’da gidiyorum." Similarly, when using the verb "sevmek" (to love), we need the accusative suffix. So instead of saying "İstanbul seviyorum," we should say "İstanbul’u seviyorum."

And the next one is "-dık, -dik -duk, -dük" suffixes. These are relative clause suffixes, and they help connect two sentences. In English, these sentences are often connected with “that,” but in Turkish, we use "-dık, -dik., duk, dük suffixes." For example, instead of saying “gittin düşündüm,” which is incorrect, you should say “gittiğini düşündüm” (I thought you’d gone). Similarly, instead of saying “gördüm, onunla konuştun,” you should say “onunla konuştuğunu gördüm” (I saw you talking to him).

Lastly, I want to talk about the difference between “değil” and “yok.” Learners often mix up these two words. “Yok” means something does not exist, while “değil” means something is not something else. For example, “masada kitap yok” means “there is no book on the table,” whereas “bu bir kalem değil” means “this is not a pencil.” So, it’s important to use them in the right context.
