Turkish Lessons -1 : Challenging letters in the Turkish Alphabet!

TRANSCRIPTION OF THE EPISODE

Music

Herkese merhaba! Today we start a series. We will read texts from the first topics of Turkish and talk about them. In this episode, which is the first part of the series, we’ll read a text that contains a lot of letters that are difficult to pronounce in Turkish. After listening to this text, I suggest you go to the website and read the text aloud. Let's get started!

First, let me tell you which letters in Turkish are likely tricky to pronounce (though you probably already know them quite well): c as in cam, soft g as in ağaç, ı as in ışık, ö as in ördek, ş as in şarkı, and ü as in üzüm.

Now let’s read the text.

When Işık woke up in the morning, she looked at her alarm clock. “Ugh, I’m late again!” she said and quickly got out of bed. She didn’t have time for breakfast. Grabbing her bag, she rushed outside.

On the way, she stopped by the market. “Can I get a bagel and a yogurt drink?” she asked. The shopkeeper smiled and said, “Of course, Işık! You’re in quite a rush today.” Işık smiled back: “Yes, I’m running a bit late!”

The weather outside was cool. While eating her bagel, Işık waited at the bus stop. There was an older woman standing next to her. “The weather is lovely today, isn’t it?” the woman asked. Işık replied, “Yes, it’s cool, but sunny. Perfect for a walk!”

The bus arrived, and Işık got on, choosing a seat by the window. “Today started off so rushed, but it’s going to be a good day,” she thought. As the bus moved through the city, she watched the scenery through the window.

So let’s repeat these words:

  1. Işık

  2. öf

  3. yatağından

  4. değil mi

  5. otobüs

  6. yürüyüş

  7. güneş

In this episode, we focused on some of the challenging sounds in Turkish, like 'ı,' 'ç,' 'ö,' 'ğ,' and 'ü.' Next time, we’ll dive into how to make words plural in Turkish—a key part of building sentences. Stay tuned, and see you in the next episode! :)
