Welcome to the third episode of our Turkish Lessons series! Today, we’ll focus on essential questions in Turkish, like 'Bu kim?' (Who is this?) and 'Bu ne?' (What is this?). We’ll also learn how to ask and answer yes-no questions. To help you practice, we have a simple and fun story where these questions appear in real-life situations. Let’s get started!
Kütüphanede Bir Gün
Ali ve Ayşe, okuldan sonra kütüphaneye gitti. Kapının önünde bir adam duruyordu. Ayşe, "Bu kim?" diye sordu.Ali, "Bu, kütüphaneci," dedi. "O, kitapları düzenliyor ve insanlara yardımcı oluyor."
İçeri girdiler. Raflarda birçok kitap vardı. Ayşe bir kitap aldı ve Ali'ye sordu:"Bu ne?"Ali kitabın kapağına baktı ve cevap verdi: "Bu, bir tarih kitabı."
Ayşe, "Bu kitap ilginç mi?" diye sordu.Ali, "Evet, çok ilginç!" dedi.
Sonra Ali bir masa gördü ve "Burası boş mu?" diye sordu.Ayşe, "Hayır, burada insanlar oturuyor," dedi.
Kütüphanede sessizlik vardı. Birkaç öğrenci ders çalışıyordu. Ayşe bir defter aldı ve Ali’ye sordu:"Bu senin defterin mi?"Ali, "Hayır, bu benim değil," dedi.
Sonra kütüphaneci yanlarına geldi ve "Siz üye misiniz?" diye sordu.Ali, "Evet, biz üyeyiz," dedi.Ayşe ise "Hayır, ben üye değilim," dedi.

A Day In the Library
Ali and Ayşe went to the library after school. A man was standing in front of the door.
Ayşe asked, "Who is this?"
Ali said, "This is the librarian. He organizes books and helps people."
They went inside. There were many books on the shelves. Ayşe picked up a book and asked Ali:
"What is this?"
Ali looked at the cover of the book and answered, "This is a history book."
Ayşe asked, "Is this book interesting?"
Ali said, "Yes, it’s very interesting!"
Then Ali saw a table and asked, "Is this place empty?"
Ayşe said, "No, people are sitting here."
There was silence in the library. A few students were studying. Ayşe took a notebook and asked Ali:
"Is this your notebook?"
Ali said, "No, this is not mine."
Then the librarian came to them and asked, "Are you members?"
Ali said, "Yes, we are members."
But Ayşe said, "No, I am not a member."
Let’s look at the questions:
"Bu kim?" sorusu / The question "Bu kim?" – Bir kişinin kim olduğunu sormak için kullanılır. / Used to ask who someone is.
Örnek / Example:
Bu kim? → Bu, kütüphaneci.
Who is this? → This is the librarian.
"Bu ne?" sorusu / The question "Bu ne?" – Bir nesnenin ne olduğunu sormak için kullanılır. / Used to ask what something is.
Örnek / Example:
Bu ne? → Bu, bir tarih kitabı.
What is this? → This is a history book.
Evet-Hayır Soruları / Yes-No Questions – Bir şeyin doğru olup olmadığını öğrenmek için kullanılır. / Used to confirm or deny information.
Örnekler / Examples:
Bu kitap ilginç mi? → Evet, çok ilginç!
Is this book interesting? → Yes, it's very interesting!
Burası boş mu? → Hayır, burada insanlar oturuyor.
Is this place empty? → No, people are sitting here.
Sahiplik soruları / Possession Questions – Bir şeyin kime ait olduğunu öğrenmek için kullanılır. / Used to ask if something belongs to someone.
Örnekler / Examples:
Bu senin defterin mi? → Hayır, bu benim değil.
Is this your notebook? → No, this is not mine.
Üyelik veya durum soruları / Membership or Status Questions – Bir kişinin belirli bir gruba veya duruma ait olup olmadığını öğrenmek için kullanılır. / Used to ask if someone belongs to a group or has a specific status.
Örnekler / Examples:
Siz üye misiniz? → Evet, biz üyeyiz.
Are you members? → Yes, we are members.
Sen üye misin? → Hayır, ben üye değilim.
Are you a member? → No, I am not a member.
