Türkçe'de iki tür "geçmiş zaman" var. Biz bir şeyi doğrudan bildiğimizde veya tecrübe ettiğimizde "belirli geçmiş zaman" kullanıyoruz. Belirli diyoruz yani "belli, clear" demek. Bu olaya şahit olduk, biliyoruz. Belirli geçmiş zaman için "-dı" ekini kullanıyoruz. Konuştu, gitti gibi...

Diğer geçmiş zaman ise "belirsiz geçmiş zaman." Belirsiz, yani belli değil, unclear demek. Bunu ise bir şeye şahit olmadığımızda, onu tecrübe etmediğimizde ama başkasından duyduğumuzda ya da öğrendiğimizde kullanıyoruz. Belirsiz geçmiş zaman için "-miş" ekini kullanıyoruz. Gelmiş, gitmiş gibi...

(There are two types of past tense in Turkish. We use the definite past tense when we have personal knowledge or directly experience something. This tense shows events that are witnessed by the speaker. The suffix '-di' is used and can be formed as ''-dı -du, -dü, -ti, -tı -tu, -tü'' according to the vowel harmony rules! We use the indefinite past tense for reporting an event that somebody did not witness in person. So if we aren't there and we hear from someone else, we use the indefinite past tense. The suffix '-miş' is used and can be formed as ''-muş, -mış, -müş'' according to the vowel harmony rules.)

ÖRNEKLER

Örnek 1: (Belirli Geçmiş Zaman, Definite Past Tense)

Biz dün bir konsere gittik. Konserde çok insan vardı. Şarkılar dinledik ve sanatçılarla birlikte şarkı söyledik. Çok eğlendik ve gece eve döndük.

(Yesterday, we went to a concert. There were a lot of people at the concert. We listened to songs and sang along with the artists. We had a lot of fun and returned home at night.)

Örnek 2: (Belirli Geçmiş Zaman, Definite Past Tense)

Ben geçen yıl İstanbul'a gittim. Orada birçok müzeyi ziyaret ettim. İstanbul'da çok lezzetli yemekler yedim ve birçok insanla tanıştım. Birkaç Türkçe kelime öğrendim.

(Last year, I went to Istanbul. I visited many museums there. I ate a lot of delicious food in Istanbul and met many people. I learned a few Turkish words.)

Örnek 3: (Belirsiz Geçmiş Zaman, Indefinite Past Tense)

O beş yıl önce buraya taşınmış. Burada bir ev almış ve bir iş bulmuş. Birçok arkadaş edinmiş. Evlenmiş ve çocukları olmuş. Bunları bilmiyordum, o dün bana her şeyi anlattı.

(He moved here five years ago. He bought a house and found a job. He made many friends. He got married and had children. I didn't know these, but he/she told me everything yesterday.)

Örnek 4: (Belirli Geçmiş Zaman ve Belirsiz Geçmiş Zaman, Definite and Indefinite Past Tense)

Dün annemle telefonda konuştum. Babamla yemek yemişler, sonra babam dışarıya çıkmış. Annem de bir film izlemiş ve sonra da beni aramak istemiş. Biraz konuştuk. Sana selam söyledi.

(Yesterday, I talked to my mom. They had dinner with my dad, then my dad went out. My mom watched a movie and later wanted to call me. We talked for a while. She sent her regards to you.)
